A strong field turned out for the long established and highly successful Astbury Junior Open on 3rd August. The Open is a 36 hole Nett competition and is generously sponsored by Eileen and Ken Dale and Dave Shakesby.

On a day of good scoring, with some very talented juniors representing their home clubs splendidly, one performance still stood out. Joe Parry, 2 Hcp, from Chirk was a late entry ( 4 days before the event) and was a strong winner of the main prize and trophy. Having never played the course he started by driving the first and with a tap in eagle this set the tone for his fabulous first round as he returned a fine Nett 66+71 for 137. His 36 hole gross score of 141 was a 10 shot margin over the field but a slim 1 shot Nett advantage over Tom Gilsenan from Astbury on 138 nett and Jack Duncalf from  Sandiway 3rd on 140. Being a nett competition Joe couldn't win the gross prize which meant that gross score prizes were lead by 2 players from Trentham with Ryan Enkin (4Hcp) 1st with 151 and 2nd Tom Smith (5Hcp) with 153. The event was organised by Jane Bozon ably supported by Norma and George Pickford on the desk, and behind the scenes by the Chairman Dominic McAllister with Harry Gannon invaluable on the computer for results. Astbury Captain's Sue Bentley and Pete Bozon were on hand in the club house after the event to present the prizes.

A great event and one for Astbury and Joe to be proud of, with some excellent portents for junior golf in the area.
