* Update on Open Day report

Since the report below the Board is delighted to provide an update that the "on the day" applications to join Astbury from the Open Day have now risen to a stunning 21 across all categories!! This has turned what was already a very successful event into something for which every member should be delighted. To  achieve that level of response at our Golf Club in the current climate totally justifies the claim that Astbury is a club and golfing facility that is the envy of many. We should all take pride in that fact, stand back and appreciate how OTHERS see our club, and celebrate the efforts of the board and the pro shop, and John Burrows in particular, in making the day a success beyond anyone's wildest dreams. To achieve that without eroding the joining and membership fees that reinforce Astbury's position as a premium club is brilliant because we lose those values at our peril. This will not allow us to get complacent, but, as Eric said below creates a Buzz about Astbury that we should all share in.

* Open Day Report from Eric Johnston

Astbury Open Day

Sunday 15th April witnessed a unique day in the history of Astbury Golf Club.
As a club the average age of our membership has been increasing steadily over the years mirroring general population demographics. Almost everywhere in the UK golf clubs are losing members and according to a recent survey there are almost 43,000 fewer members than a year ago. Golf is even harder to justify in a recession so we shouldn’t be too surprised to learn that over the past 18 months twenty clubs have gone into administration with over a hundred more facing “significant financial problems”

We over the past few decades have had a healthy waiting list however in today’s environment we have immediate vacancies for new members. The outlook suggests another challenging year as our membership continues to decrease.

The Open Day was the Boards proactive approach to recruitment, to help the club through this difficult situation. Taking on the challenge was the ultimate test of good planning, discipline, stamina and resolve.

As to the day on arrival every guest was personally greeted and given a presentation pack which highlighted the joining terms, the facilities and services of the club and the benefits of membership.
All available tee-times had been booked in advance and over eighty five participated, and throughout the day the feedback on the condition of the course, the fun competitions, service in the clubhouse and the individual attention to each guest was incredibly positive. We can all be proud of the first class service delivered on the day.

The day secured 11 new members across all categories with the likelihood of more joining before the end of the month. Members appreciate Astbury is their club and by attracting new members we are securing a healthy future.

The Board of Directors would like to acknowledge their grateful thanks to the following:
John Burrows: for his exceptional planning and marketing skills.
Neil, Iain and Lauren: for promoting the event at every opportunity and also for their considerable hard work on the day.
Patsy & Peter: for the excellent brunch and the service provided by the staff.
Sue: for her usual wonderful job servicing the many thirsty guests and members.
Dominic & Neil: for promoting the club and securing so many new members.

To the many directors and members for their help on the day and to those who contributed but were unable to attend.

Finally to the members of Astbury for being so supportive and accepting with good grace the need to restrict their playing time.

The Open Day is the first of several initiatives to be rolled out by the Board who are committed to ensure our 90 year old club has a viable future and can look forward with confidence to 2022 our Centenary Year.

Later in the day there was undoubtedly a “feel good factor” as chants of jubilation reverberated around the clubhouse.

* Open day letter from the Captains

Dear Member,

You will be aware of the importance of maintaining  full membership to keep our annual subscriptions at a fair and affordable level. Consequently, the Board have agreed to run an "Open Day" on Sunday 15th April. The idea of the Open day is to provide prospective members with the opportunity to play the course and see for themselves the excellent facilities that we have to offer, including the club house, Pro shop and Practice Ground.

We hope you will take the chance to come along, bringing any family or friends that you know, who might be interested in joining the club and play 12 or 18 holes, have a breakfast-style  brunch and take part in the target golf and putting competitions. For those who want to tune up their game as the season starts there will be free coaching clinics on the practice ground as well as Special promotions in the Shop.

Because of the likely demand we are now taking bookings for start times for the golf in the Shop, the only condition is that you play with a non-member! Incidentally, the course will be open for general play by members before 0920, between 11.00 and 1230, and after 3.00 pm.

On the day we will be selling Starter packages and memberships. For Full members there will be a "ONE DAY ONLY" discount of £100 on the joining fee and a £35 discount for Juniors.

So, it's a great opportunity for prospective members to come and play the course, understand what benefits there are to  membership of Astbury Golf Club and get a good deal on the day.

Your support will be much appreciated

Captain and Lady Captain
