IAIN SEATH BECOMES A CHESHIRE COUNTY COACH AS ASTBURY GOLF CLUB BECOMES RECOGNISED CENTRE FOR CHESHIRE COACHING

Congratulations are in order for Iain Seath who was chosen as one of the Cheshire coaching team formed by a new coaching initiative between the PGA and Cheshire Golf Union.

Iains official title is ‘England Golf Academy Coach for Cheshire’.

‘I will combine my existing duties as a member of the Professional Staff here at Astbury Golf Club with this new role as England Coach’. Having appointed Iain in this role, the Academy Organisers felt it appropriate to choose Astbury as a recognised centre for Cheshire Coaching. Astbury Golf Club was chosen ahead of other local venues due to the excellent facilities we have as well as the Coaching set up we have in place.

A real feather in the cap for Astbury Golf Club I hope you will agree. Iains new role further supports our claim that Astbury Golf Club has the strongest team of Professionals it has ever had.

‘My main task is to take a small number of talented junior golfers and develop all aspects of their game including fitness and psychological aspects as well as work on their golf swing.  Groups are small so the disruption on the practise area will be negligible.’

‘My first challenge was to hold an assessment day at Astbury Golf Club. Some of the best young talent in Cheshire came to Astbury. I gave them a number of challenges relating to swing, fitness and attitude before deciding who to put forward to the coaching programme that I will deliver.’

‘Some of Astbury’s junior members and academy members performed well and will be recommended for Cheshire Coaching.’

I hope you will all join us in congratulating Iain on his appointment.

WIN TITLEIST GOLF BALLS IN YOUR NEXT MEDAL

This is an interesting deal from your pro shop with the help of Titleist. Buy as many titleist balls as you like, whether it be a sleeve of three or a dozen. If you play to your handicap in your next medal or stableford competition, we will double your quantity FOR FREE!

For example, Barry Birdie buys a dozen pro v ones before his medal round. He then shoots a net 71 and receives another dozen balls free of charge!

Sarah Shankeet buys a sleeve of 3 titleist nxt tour that she needed anyway. She then shoots a net 80 and so does not get the free balls.

CHECK YOUR BASICS AND IMPROVE YOUR DIRECTION

I have carried out a very brief survey during my last twenty lessons. A massive 65% of golfers had problems with body or clubface alignment. Why wait to pay us guys £20 when it is fairly straightforward exercise to get yourself lined up?

You can use a couple of clubs or poles. Anything with a straight edge.

1-   Place a pole on the ground and point it directly towards the target. Place a ball as near to the pole as you can without it distracting you. When your club is placed behind the ball, it should be obvious to see if the leading edge of the face is pointing towards the target.

2 Place another shaft parallel to the first one and about six inches away from your feet. This will help you to ensure that your feet are aiming in the correct direction.

Simple as that. It will take you less than two minutes to set this up at the start of your practise session and can drastically improve your game. Do it in every practise session you ever have.

If your shots still do not do what you want them to do, at least you have eliminated an obvious issue and we can get to work on improving your swing.

ANOTHER ASTBURY TALE

SHAKEY GETS FLOORED by Harold Staniforth.

Hi Neil,

No one will ever beat Guy's shot into the pro shop but I do have a pretty good one to report. Some years ago, at least 20, I was playing in a competition with Dave Shakesby. On the seventeenth tee, Dave took a three iron. He couldn't hit woods in those days. Anyway, on contact with the ball the head of the three iron snapped off and sailed off in the direction of the implement shed. The ball went along the ground like an exocet missile only to hit the concrete block indicating the forward tee. From there it came back at great speed to hit Dave on the knee, dropping him to the ground, from where it disappeared into the undergrowth and out of bounds.

When he got to his feet, Dave found himself with a very sore knee, with only the shaft of the three iron in his hand, to be told he had to hit three off the tee. I can't remember if we found either the ball or the head of his club.

Not in Guy's league, but not bad.

All the best

Harold Staniforth

So let us recap- an iron off the tee for ‘safety’ which resulted in a damaged kneecap, a broken three iron and three off the tee. Nice one Dave!!

Thanks ‘adge’. Oh, and thanks to Dave Shakesby as well! If you have any interesting tales to tell, please send them in.

Thanks for reading, Neil, Iain, Lauren and Andy
